Frequently asked questions about senior discounts
What are senior discounts?
Businesses offer senior discounts to build customer loyalty within a very important segment of our society. It is a business decision on their part. Many businesses that have senior discounts do not advertise them well. It is always best to inquire at your favorite business. For example, asking a server after you have been seated is not a good idea. A server might not be aware of the discount. Ask the hostess before you are seated.
Senior discounts are not a legal requirement. Be a good citizen when using senior discounts or when you find out there has been a change to a program or a program has even been eliminated.
How old do you have to be to get senior discounts?
This is not an easy question to answer. The answer really is from 50 to infinity. Many AARP discounts start as early as 50. Restaurants tend to start senior discounts at 60. The recurring theme here is that you need to ask. Once you hit 50, every business you frequent is a prospect for new discounts.
Why are senior discount programs always changing?
The simple answer is that senior discounts are always changing because the marketplace is always changing. Look at the changes that have taken place since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many restaurants, for example, are struggling to survive if they are even open at all. The business model for most businesses have changed. Business owner and operators are reevaluating every aspect of their businesses.
There have already been significant changes in some senior discount programs and, as seniors, we should expect more in the coming months.
Bankruptcies and store closures are taking a toll as well. Several national retail chains have been deleted from earlier versions of this list. When a company is in bankruptcy and undergoing liquidation, do not expect your senior discount to work any more. Often inventories are tuned over to liquidation companies that are actually different business who are not obligated to follow any of the policies or procedures of the company going out of business.
Going forward
We will attempt to keep this post current but senior discounts have become very fluid in the age of Covid-19! If you see a number in parentheses after a discount listing, it indicates that the discount has been verified or updated as of that date.
